All-Russia Museum of Decorative-Applied and Folk Art in Moscow has an interesting exposition of Russian lacquer painting depicting the birth of this unique phenomenon of Russian culture and its development for more than two centuries. Several rooms of the museum feature more than 300 works of the masters of Russian centers of lacquer painting – Fedoskino, Palekh, Mstera and Kholui. Lacquer painting – an ancient craft, which history dates back to XVIII century. In the beginning it was lacquered visors for hats, then, with the advent of snuff, colorful lacquer boxes, and after that, the application of this technique knew no bounds. Products were considered piece of furniture that guests could present as a gift and hope for a hearty welcome. The design motif was based on Russian folk tales and fairy tales, mysterious landscapes, as well as the Russian way of life and traditions.
