Russian gymnast Laysan Utyasheva is a World champion in the team competition, two-time European champion in the team competition, multiple winner of the World Cup, a silver medalist in the World Games Akito (Japan). Laysan was born in Bashkiria, and four years later the family moved to Volgograd. Irina Viner saw Utyasheva at the competition, when the future champion was 11 years old. According to Laysan, Viner liked her long legs and attractive oriental eyes.
In 1997, the 12-year-old Laysan moved to Moscow and became part of the Russian national rhythmic gymnastics. And two years later she was awarded the title of Master of Sports. Injury
In 2002, Laysan’s life was tough. At demonstrations in Samara the gymnast landed badly on the mat and beat off the foot. Utyasheva passed examination that revealed no injuries. Laysan has continued to train and thus only worsened her condition. She began to complain of pain in the legs, and somebody even accused her of faking injury.
A few months later, Viner sent Utyasheva for a medical examination to Germany. As a result, she was diagnosed with multiple fractures of the scaphoid bone of one leg and the difference due to the constant training. Almost a year gymnast trained on broken feet! As a result, 17-year-old Laysan could not only return to the sport, but even stand! – she was threatened an amputation.
Back to the gym Utyasheva succeeded after several operations and support of Irina Viner, the love of whom, according to Laysan, was more expensive than any medal. German doctors did not want to take up a bad case of the Russian gymnasts, but Viner decided to put her pupil on feet at all costs and found surgeons in Moscow.
For eight months Utyasheva could not walk and earned bloody blisters on crutches, and in 2004 has again appeared in the national team of Russia. She became European champion in the team competition, won several victories in international tournaments. Laysan even was going to perform at the Olympic Games in Beijing, hoping to win a long-awaited gold, but ended in 2006, has decided to retire and went to Beijing as a commentator.
