Vase with the image of chrysanthemums France, Nancy, Emile Galle.
1900.
State Hermitage Department of Western European
applied arts.
The vase was purchased in 1900 from the Galle store in Nancy; entered
to the museum on October 24, 1900, along with two more objects by Galle. There is an account for these three items in the Galle store in Nancy
dated September 27, 1900 for No. 181 for 1500 francs. Vase with picture
chrysanthemums are listed under the first number as “a bowl of matte crystal”,
worth 500 francs.
For the first time chrysanthemums were
brought to Europe from Japan in the 17th century, and widespread
received only in the 19th century. The image of this flower became one
from the favorite motives of Art Nouveau. Bright brownish-yellow glass shades
from which the vase is made, are consonant with the Japanese tradition, which considered
chrysanthemum is not only a messenger of autumn, but also a symbol of the sun.
