An ethnographic, trade and craft complex a stone’s throw from the island of Kant and the Cathedral is the Fish Village in Kaliningrad. The reconstructed corner of old Konigsberg stretches between Medov and Vysoky bridges. Some of the buildings are made in the so-called order style, the other part in the Baroque and Classicism styles. The fishing village in Kaliningrad is a new building, there are several comfortable hotels, excellent restaurants, conference rooms, a SPA-salon and a small museum.
History of Fishing village
There were no significant buildings on the site of the Rybnaya village either before the war or in Soviet times. The famous Koenigsberg Fish Market was located a little to the north, now there is a square in its place.
The construction of the village we know today began in 2006. The complex is connected by the Honey Bridge with the Kant Island, and the Yubileiny Bridge with the southern part of Kaliningrad. The Jubilee Bridge is a pedestrian and drawbridge bridge, it was built in 2005, on the occasion of the city’s birthday.
A walk through the Fish Village along the Pregolya River will briefly introduce you to the architecture of the old town. Next to the complex is the restored building of the Konigsberg synagogue, which was destroyed in the 1930s.
What to see
Next to the information center is the 31-meter Lighthouse Tower. Climb it: a beautiful panorama of the city opens from here.
Go to the museum located in the tower. The exposition of the museum contains a unique collection of weapons and household items from the 16th century, found during the construction of the ethnographic complex.
It has its own river pier in good weather you can take a boat trip.
Solnechny Boulevard begins at the Fish Village, which leads to another attraction a new stadium built for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. A ten-minute walk and you are near the arena.
Fishing village at different times of the year
In summer, pleasure boats leave from the river pier. You can go in the direction of the Kaliningrad Bay, for example, to the bulk island of Kosse, on the way to see the scientific vessels “Vityaz” and “Cosmonaut Viktor Patsaev”, sail under a two-tiered bridge. Excursions on boats along the Pregolya into the interior of the Kaliningrad region are offered. If you wish, you can walk by water to the medieval Tapiau Castle, which is located in the city of Gvardeysk. Boats leave for excursions on average once every half hour.
In winter, there is less entertainment in the Fish Village. You can just sit in one of the cozy restaurants with a glass of mulled wine, watching the fishermen pull fat perch and pike out of the Pregolya.
