The protagonist of the epic series – a real cat named Timofei. Timofei has a real military card, military rank, and military specificity. Artist Alexander Zavaliy draws his historical cat Timofei with oil on canvas. Alexander Zavaliy – member of the Union of Artists of Russia, an expert on heraldry, and a specialist in the restoration of antiques. In addition, he works in such genres as portrait, miniatures, historical, animalistic and monumental painting. Works of the series “Epic Cats” performed in the genre of historical animalism with a unique sense of humor, great attention to detail and love of cats.
Alexander Zavaliy was born 27 January 1955 in Vorkuta, the north of Russia. Then his family moved to Alexandria, Ukraine. There he studied the Ukrainian language, graduated from high school, and the question of where to continue his education was clear. So, he entered graphic arts faculty of the Kuban State University in Krasnodar, Russia. Since 1980, he has participated in professional exhibitions.
All this time he was looking for his own handwriting in a surreal way. Alexander worked in the theater as a decorator, props and artist. After a while, he did the same, but at the film studio of Gorky and “Mosfilm”. In particular, preference was given to war films (eg., the series “The Apostle”). He also illustrated books – fiction and children’s stories. Besides, Zavaliy engaged in modelism and even wrote a book about it, titled “The Art of the diorama.”
Alexander Zavaliy considers himself the artist of mythological realism. The artist draws his inspiration from the outside world. He paints what he is concerned about at the moment – a historical painting, allegory, or animals. In order to achieve the most complete expression of artistic conception, he can combine genres. Alexander highlights artists of “The World of Art” movement. He believes that this is the highest achievement of Russian art today.
